Procrastination King

Hello again my fellow classmates.
I planed writing this post this weekend but it seems I will finish it around 11 pm 9/22/2008.
I am sure from the title of the post you get a fairly clear picture what is the managing issue that I am tackling and why I am writing this just before the deadline.
I have been procrastinating since I can remember. As a kid I was late for school, late for my soccer practice, late when I am meeting my friends and not much has changed over years.
I work and go to school now and one of the most annoying issues is that no matter how much free time I have I will put of starting to prepare for work, do the homework or study for a test until it is evident that I HAVE to.

I will give you one classic example- studying for a test.
Imagine having a test on Monday and knowing that you have to use whole Sunday to study. I will make a rational plan to have enough sleep, get up, eat breakfast, relax for an hour or two and start studying from 1 pm until 10 pm with a few brakes for lunch, watching TV...
This amazing plan always turns out to look like this- I get up around noon, I eat my breakfast, I turn on the TV and spend my Sunday on sofa. Around midnight when I used every excuse possible to postpone studying I will start and study all night. In the process I am likely to take many breaks during the night, come to the test late and without covering all the material needed.
This just one example I could give you many more - not cleaning my house for weeks even tough I planed doing it, start preparing for work after I finish everything else that is far less important... the list goes on and on and I won't bother you with all.

It is obvious to you as it has been for me for a long time that I need to change something and it need to happen soon. Part of the problem is that even with my lack of time management and irresponsibility I still do well in school and at work. The frustration comes from the fact that I could do so much more and that I am putting myself in a position of unnecessary pressure and stress when there is absolutely no reason for that.

I will try to change my ways,
I will change my ways,
I can't tell you how but I will do it.
And most importantly for you,
I will keep you posted.
If you have any valuable advice I would love to hear it!
Thank you,
Mirko

Unfortunately I'm lacking valuable advice but I can definitely relate to your habit of procrastination. Not only do I do everything last minute but I've managed to convince myself that it's the only right way to do things- "Working under pressure gives the best results!", I rationalize. Maybe one day I'll get around to working on it...

Hey, I think sometimes people work under pressure the best but if you really think that you will be doing better and getting more things done then the best way for you is to write everything out. I believe well I know it has helped me a lot, when I write things down in a planner I can see the things that are coming ahead as well as things I need to approach soon enough. It also makes me feel like I should get stuff over with because I write down events coming up as well- so this way its like if I want to go something else besides school work, then I have to also get my stuff done. Hope that helps!

I totally understand your situation. I use to be a notorious procrastinator until about a year ago when I realized how much it was ruined not just my school work, but my life as well. I use to believe that I could only work well if I was put into a position of stress and anxiety, which I thought would help me write better papers or do better quality assignments. However, I soon realized that I could actually do better quality work AND enjoy my lifestyle by doing things at a certain time of day. For instance, I know that I'm more awake and concentrate better from 3 to 8 p.m. Not only that, but I also realized that all my favorite tv shows or friends were online only after that time. In the end, I realized I wasn't missing anything and should do my work between 3 to 8 p.m. So I try to schedule any homework or papers at that time. For others, they could be morning or night people, and I think they should work in the time they feel more comfortable. If I could give you any advise, it would be to first ask yourself: "Am I a night person or a morning person?" From there, I would say try to work during that time period. I would also pick classes in the spring that work around your study time. I hope this helps!
